Golf (1974)Founded in 1937, Volkswagen AG is a German car manufacturer headquartered in Wolfsburg, Germany. Its holding company, the Volkswagen Group, was created in 1975 and is now the second-largest automaker in the world.
Launched in 1974, the Volkswagen Golf, also known as the Volkswagen Rabbit in the US, is the most iconic compact car (or small family car) in the world. The original Golf, the Mk1, was a front-wheel drive, front-engined replacement for the rear-engined, rear-wheel drive Volkswagen Beetle – design-wise the most iconic compact car of the previous generation. The most recent edition of the Golf, the Mk 7, was launched in 2013. Historically, the Golf is Volkswagen’s best-selling model and is today the absolute benchmark in this category.
