Kokichi Mikimoto was the first in the world to successfully culture a pearl in 1893 and started the pearl industry with the establishment of his luxury pearl company Mikimoto. In 1899, Mikimoto opened the first pearl specialty boutique, the Mikimoto Pearl Store, in Tokyo’s Ginza shopping district. In 1913, Mikimoto opened a store in London, soon to be followed by stores in New York, Paris, and other major cities. The Mikimoto name not only was synonymous with cultured pearls, but also became a symbol of Japanese culture around the world.
