Smeg Group S.p.A.

Established 1948

Founded in 1948 by Vittorio Bertazzoni in Guastalla, Italy, Smeg is an manufacturer of upmarket domestic appliances. The name is an acronym for Smalterie Metallurgiche Emiliane Guastalla (‘Emilian metallurgical enamel works of Guastalla’).

In the 1950s, Smeg launched one of the first gas cookers with an automatic switch-on function and in 1970 they launched a 60cm, 14 place setting dishwasher. Smeg’s real breakthrough came in the 1990s, when they introduced their colored retro 50s refrigerators, which grew out to become the most iconic refrigerators in the world today.

Why on Wikiconic?
The real McCoy is the Coldspot (1934) by Raymond Loewy, which is highly collectable.
