Underwear

Zimmerli of Switzerland

Established 1871

Founded in 1871 by Johann Jakob Zimmerli, Zimmerli is a Swiss manufacturer of luxurious underwear, renowned for its use of natural fibres and careful production ensuring the highest standards.

The story began in 1866, when Isaac William Lambs invented the manually run single-needle knitting machine. Johann Jakob and his wife, Pauline, saw the potential of this machine and learned from one of Lamb’s agents how to knit hosiery and men’s socks. Driven by success and the desire for new products, Pauline invented a new knitting machine and sent her plans and ideas to the USA. That very same year, the first two-needle knitting machine was delivered to Switzerland and Pauline began to manufacture ribbed fabric and underwear – laying the foundation for an entire industry.
