Founded in 1843 by Frederick Stanley as a small manufacturer of hardware from wrought iron, Stanley/ Black & Decker today is a world-leading provider of tool and powertools. Stanley is responsible for many innovations. Introduced in 1936, his most iconic innovation is the retractable utility knife. In British, Australian and New Zealand English, along with Dutch and Austrian German, a Stanley knife is a genericized trademark for a utility knife.
