Founded in 1876 by Albert Spalding in Chicago, Illinois, Spalding is an American sporting goods company specialized in the production of balls for many sports, but is most-known for its basketballs. Spalding was the first company to produce a basketball for official use. The company developed its first basketball in 1894 at the behest of James Naismith, who invented the sport of basketball in 1891. Since 1983, it has been the official ball supplier to the NBA.
