Alessi

Shaker 870 (1957), Carlo Mazzeri & Luigi Massoni

Founded in 1921 by Giovanni Alessi, Alessi is a manufacturer of housewares and kitchen utensils, mostly known for their dreadful ‘designer’ objects. Alessi was one of the first to execute otherwise ordinary tools and objects as high design. It is safe to say that most of the Alessi products are things you can easily do without.

However, in the 1950s Alessi manufactured some timeless classics in their hotel and bar range. Designed in 1957 by Carlo Mazzeri and Luigi Massoni, the Alessi 870 cocktail shaker is the perfect example. The 870 was one of the first projects assigned to outside designers and is found in almost every bar in the world. It is also part of the MoMA design collection.
