Van den Acker
Established 1807Founded in 1807 by Henricus van den Acker, Van den Acker is one of the few Dutch weaving mills that successfully serves the worldwide market with its own collections. At this moment the sixth generation runs the company. The company belongs to the 200 oldest and still existing companies of the Netherlands, and in 2007 Van den Acker received the royal status ‘By appointment to the court of the Netherlands’.
Tea towels originated in the 18th century in the UK, where the lady of the household would use them to dry fine china and delicate tea sets. In the 19th century and early-mid 20th century, a glass towel or dish towel would likely have been a striped or checked cloth so that it was decorative as well as useful.
