Burton Snowboards

Established 1977

Founded in 1977 by Jake Burton Carpenter, Burton Snowboards played an important role in turning snowboarding from a backyard hobby into a world-class sport. Burton built the world’s first snowboard factory and is the largest snowboard brand in the world.

The snowboard was invented in 1966 by Sherman Poppen. Poppen originally created the device for the amusement of his children and named in the ‘Snurfer’ as the board allowed him to surf on snow. Poppen licensed the product to the Brunswick Corporation, but Brunswick discontinued production in 1972. By 1977, Jake Burton Carpenter, an avid competitive snurfer, began developing an improved model: the BB1 snowboard (as pictured above).
