Brunton Pocket Transit (1894)

Founded in 1895 by David W. Brunton and William Ainsworth, Brunton, Inc. is a manufacturer of technical gear for outdoor activity. Brunton is mostly known for the iconic Brunton Pocket Transit, a compass and measuring tool used by geologists and archaeologists.

Patented in 1894, the Brunton Pocket Transit is a precision compass that utilizes magnetic induction damping rather than fluid to damp needle oscillation as you see in other compasses. The Pocket Transit is used widely to make accurate degree and angle measurements in the field. The United States Army has adopted the Pocket Transit as the M2 Compass for use by crew-served artillery.
