Winmau
Established 1945Two big names feature in the history of the dartboard: Nodor, founded in 1919, and Winmau, founded in 1945 as H.A. Hicks. In the mid-1930s, Nodor invented the bristle dartboard as we know it today. When the patent on bristle dartboards expired, Winmau launched its own version and found significant more success. Winmau signed a deal with the British Darts Organisation (BDO), which made Winmau the official dartboard of the organization.
There was always an intense rivalry between the two companies; each company made several bids to acquire the other. Finally, Nodor completed a takeover of Winmau in 2002. Nodor continues to manufacture darts equipment using both brand names. The Winmau brand has maintained its close links with the BDO, and continued to be the official board supplier for major tournaments such as the Lakeside World Championship and the Winmau World Masters.
