Double edged razor

Merkur

Established 1896

Founded in 1896 by Emil Hermes, Merkur is the manufacturer of world’s most iconic double edged razor. Merkur’s first razors for wet shaving already featured the iconic safety comb, into which you clipped a removable wedge-shaped blade. At the beginning of the 20th century, Merkur began with the production of double edge razors – in the days an innovative product that reduced risk of injury and was cheap to replace. Today, the mainstream shaving market is dominated by innovations, but there still is a growing niche market for traditional shaving products. In 1996 Merkur’s biggest client, DOVO, took over the company.

Trivia:
* because there already was another company in Solingen carrying the Hermes name, Emil Hermes registers the brand name as Merkur, the Roman equivalent of Hermes, the messenger of the gods.
