Face powder

Coty

Airspun (1934)

Founded in 1904 by François Coty, Coty Inc. today is an American manufacturer of fragrances, color cosmetics and skin and body care products, based in New York. In the early part of the 20th Century loose face powders were very popular and the commercial rivalry between cosmetic companies was big.

In 1934, Coty used air-powered micronisers in their manufacturing process, producing a face powder made of smaller powder particles that were evenly sized and better mixed. These powders would be marketed as ‘Air Spun’ – implying that conventional ‘mechanical’ methods of face powder manufacture fall short. Air Spun was an instant success and paved the road for every other producer to use this technique.
