Franz Schneider Brakel (FSB)

Model FSB 1051 (1952), Johannes Potente

Founded in 1881 by Franz Schneider as a producer of furniture knobs, Franz Schneider Brakel (FSB) is a manufacturer of door handles and door fittings. After World War II, door handles were in high demand so FSB shifted form knobs to handles. The big breakthrough came between 1950 and 1963 when Johannes Potente designed several door handles, including his iconic model 1051.

The FSB 1051 handle was Johannes Potente’s first major design. He produced it in 1952. Once the copyright lapsed, it was imitated all over the world and produced by the million. The 1051 is part of the permanent collection of MoMA New York.
