Moscot

Established 1915

Founded in 1915 by Hyman Moscot, Moscot is a luxury eyewear brand, headquartered in New York City. It is one of the oldest local businesses in New York City, as well as the 13th oldest eyewear company in the world today. In 1899 Hyman Mushcot arrived from Eastern Europe via Ellis Island in New York City and started selling ready-made eyeglasses from a pushcart. In 1915 he opened his first shop.

Moscot’s most iconic frame is the Lemtosh (as pictured above), a somewhat nerdy pair of square glasses. The Lemtosh has served as the calling card for generations of free-spirited creatives and intellectuals such as Buddy Holly, Truman Capote, Woody Allen and Johnny Depp.

Why on Wikiconic?
Heritage, design.
