Specialized
Stumpjumper (1981)Founded in 1974 by Mike Sinyard, Specialized is a manufacturer of high performance bicycles, mostly known for introducing the first production mountain bike in the world, the Stumpjumper.
Launched in 1981, the Stumpjumper was the first mass-production mountain bike. It was based on a custom bike design by Tom Ritchey, today a well-known frame builder. The bike had no suspension and weighed about 14 kg. The Stumpjumper is still in production, but it has evolved significantly and now comes in front and rear suspension. An original Stumpjumper is still on display in the Smithsonian in Washington.
