Yale

Established 1868

Founded in 1868 by Linus Yale Jr. and Henry R. Towne, Yale is a leading lock manufacturer and inventor of the pin tumbler lock. Instrumental in Yale’s success was Linus Yale Sr. who owned a lock shop specialized in handmade bank locks. He registered 8 patents and redesigned the Egyptian pin-tumbler design, which would grow out to become the basis for all modern pin-tumblers.

Linus Yale Jr., went on to continue his fathers work. He improved the design of the pin-tumbler lock and used the Yale patents to design a garden variety of door locks and padlocks. In particular Yale’s vintage padlocks are objects of beauty.

In 1929 Yale purchased H&T Vaughan Ltd, in England. In 2000 Yale was purchased by the Assa-Abloy group.
