Original Magic Wand (1968)

Launched in 1968 as a vibrating massager for relieving tension and relaxing sore muscles, the iconic Hitachi Magic Wand is generally seen as the mother of all vibrators. Popularized by sex educator Betty Dodson as a masturbation aid for women, the Magic Wand today is still the vibrator most often suggested by sex therapists. It functions effectively as a clitoral vibrator and is able to bring women to orgasm.

Hitachi intended the Magic Wand to aid with massage techniques. It would relieve pain associated with back aches, and is registered under the classification ‘therapeutic electric massager’. Uncomfortable being associated with the best-selling masturbation aid, Hitachi omitted any reference to its name and rebranded it the ‘Original Magic Wand’ in 2013.
