Aluminim Group (1958), Charles & Ray EamesThe Aluminum Group series is a line of furniture designed by Charles and Ray Eames in 1958. Originally commissioned as outdoor seating for the home of J. Irwin Miller by Eero Saarinen and Alexander Girard, the Aluminum Group grew out to become an icon of office furniture.
Produced by Herman Miller (and by Vitra in Europe) since its inception, the original design featured a mesh back and seat stretched between aluminum ribs. The original mesh was quickly discontinued, with the most iconic version being black leather. In 1969, Eames added a “Soft Pad” version with cushions. The chairs’ clean, trim lines make them appropriate for all kinds of places, from classic and contemporary homes to elegant offices to hip startups.
We meant to feature the EA 117 task chair in the appropriate category, but due to ergonomic issues, many companies choose Herman Miller’s Aeron. A contemporary icon. Nonetheless, the EA108 conference chair still stands on lonely heights in this category.
