Penguin Books
Established 1935Founded in 1935 by Sir Allen Lane, Penguin Books is a British publishing house, mostly known for its iconic paperback books. Penguin revolutionized publishing by launching a series of inexpensive paperbacks, bringing high-quality fiction and non-fiction to the mass market.
Launched in 1945 and designed by German typographer Jan Tschichold, the Penguin Classics medallion series (as pictured above) are Penguin’s most iconic series. Jan Tschichold left Penguin with a set of influential rules of design principles, known as the Penguin Composition Rules.
Today Penguin Group is owned by Pearson PLC, which retains a minority holding of 47% of the stock, and Bertelsmann which controls the majority stake.
